It was produced by Madonna and Mirwais and received a mixed reception from pop-music critics, though the majority had been favorable. The song was released, along with "Nothing Fails", as the third (fourth in some regions) and final single in the winter of 2003 (see 2003 in music) in most European territories and in early 2004 (see 2004 in music) in North America. The song failed to match the chart success of its predecessors from American Life, performing moderately in most countries, but became Madonna's third consecutive single to fail to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. The song reached #3 in Canada, becoming her fifth top 10 Canadian hit off "American Life".

Composition and inspiration

"Love Profusion" is an upbeat love song, which features the use of acoustic guitars. The lyrics of the song are optimistic and are about loving one another. In the song Madonna expresses how she feels "confused" and "isolated" and how the world "can look so sad" due to all of the destruction in it. Madonna sings how lucky she is to have her lover because no matter what is happening in the world or how bad she feels, she has him to make her "feel good".

Madonna is credited by many pop music critics for not sounding removed and defensive like she did on the â€œAmerican Lifeâ€ single, instead they credit her for sounding overwhelmingly ecstatic and quite honest.

"Love Profusion" was originally released in Australia, Italy, and the United Kingdom on December 8, 2003, but was later released in North America and in France on March 16, 2004.

Madonna's record label, Warner Bros., decided to wait with a single release of the song in North America to combine promotion for the single with the release of the EstÃ©e Lauder perfume 'Beyond Paradise'. This marketing move was done because the song was featured in the advertisement for the perfume. All North American Maxi CD singles contained a perfume tester. Besides, the "Love Profusion" video is very similar to the actual perfume advertisement. Both were directed by French director Luc Besson. The song was first heard on the AOL website on April 14, 2003.

Music video

The music video for "Love Profusion" was directed by Luc Besson. The video features three sequences; Madonna walking at night in the middle of a street of some big city with skyscrapers around her and rubbish blowing around everywhere; then suddenly the camera flips and she is strolling down the middle of a bright blue sky with fairies following her and massive flowers swaying in the distance; she then ends up crawling across a crystal clear sea, with fish swimming around her. At the end of the video she is surrounded by the fairies that appear in sequence two and disappears, or as some fans suggest, is eaten.
