Eventually, other products using honey and beeswax, including edible spreads and furniture polish, were sold, before moving into the personal care line. In the early days of the company beeswax candles were among the most popular of products, though, oddly, they are no longer sold today.
In 1992, the Burt's Bees operation moved to North Carolina. The product line continued expanding, creating the products which have given the company current fame.
Current merchandise includes lip care (e.g. lip balm, lip shimmer), facial care (e.g. cleanser, moisturizer) and body care (e.g. soap, lotion, shampoo) products.
Burt's Bees uses natural and/or organic sources, and often describe each ingredient in detail on the product. In addition, every product has a "natural bar" which gives a percentage of natural ingredients in that product.
Burt's Bees products come in regular and sample sizes which are available in natural and specialty food markets (e.g. Trader Joe's & Whole Foods Market). In 2005, the traditional pharmacy chains, CVS and Walgreens, began selling the products. They are also sold at Borders Books outlets.
Burt's Outlet is the online store. There, excess or discontinued products are discounted (25-50% off). A "grab bag" of random items is a popular choice.
Significant controversy exists as to whether this company is abandoning their traditional revenue source to shoot for big retailer presence and demands. One example of an unhappy former retailer is "Blessed Bees."
