It is widely regarded as the best giallo ever made, as well as the best film of Argento's distinguished career (along with 1977's Suspiria).
Plot
The film opens with the sound of children's music playing. We see the shadows of two figures struggling, and one of them is stabbed to death. The credits then stop rolling and we see Marcus Daly (Hemmings) teaching a jazz session at the music conservatory. Marcus tells his students that they are playing the music a little "too well," since this type of music originated in the brothels.
Following this, Argento's camera pans in on a conference of parapsychology. The guest of honor is a psychic medium named Helga Ulmann (Meril). During the lecture Helga becomes hysterical as she senses the presence of terrible, murderous thoughts. She points into the audience and tells of a child crying, and of blood, and states that this person has killed before and will kill again. Someone in the back of the theater gets up and leaves. After the conference has ended, Helga tells her colleague, Dr. Giordani (Mauri), that she knows the identity of the person whose mind she entered. She tells Giordani that she will give him the name of the person in the notes that she plans to write, and that afterwards he can do what he thinks best.
Later that night Helga is alone in her apartment, talking to someone on the phone. Her conversation is interrupted when she hears muted, child-like music (it is the same music that was playing over the murder sequence in the opening credits). There is a knock on her door. She finishes her conversation and goes to answer the door. As her hand is about to touch the door knob she recoils in horror. Suddenly the door bursts open and a gloved hand holding a butcher's cleaver swings down, chopping deeply into her shoulder. Helga falls and the cleaver strikes her in the back. The attacker steals all of the notes in Helga's apartment.
Outside of the apartment complex, Marcus is walking home when he comes across his alcoholic friend Carlo (Lavia). Carlo works as a pianist in the bar across the street. Marcus and Carlo talk for a few minutes before their conversation is interrupted by a terrible scream. They listen for a moment, but hearing nothing further they shrug it off and Carlo goes back to work. Marcus turns to go to his apartment, but sees Helga's screaming figure in front of a window. A cleaver-wielding hand appears behind her and swings down, driving Helga through the window and pushing shards of glass into her throat. Marcus rushes up to help her, but by the time he gets to the apartment it is too late, as Helga is dead. Marcus calls the police and tells the lead investigator, Supt. Calcabrini (Pagni), that he thinks he witnessed something strange that may provide a vital clue to the killer's identity, but that he cannot remember what it was. Marcus is under the impression that it was a painting of a group of faces (there are many such paintings in Helga's apartment), but that he cannot put his finger on the exact painting. A young female reporter named Gianna Brezzi (Nicolodi) shows up at the crime scene and takes Marcus' photograph.
