" At the core of envy seems to be an upward social comparison, that threatens a person's self-esteem: another person has something that the envier considers to be important to have. However, what is envied could also be something that is only of personal importance to the envier, even if what the other person has is of little significance in his or her society, or even seen as a sign of inferior status. If the other person is perceived to be similar as the envier, the aroused envy will be particularly intense, because it signals to the envier that it just as well could have been him or her who had the desired object. .

The word jealous is often used to describe an envious state. In its correct usage, jealousy is the fear of losing something to another person (a loved one in the prototypical form), while envy is the pain or frustration caused by another person having something that one does not have oneself.

In some cultures, envy is often associated with the color green, as in "green with envy". The phrase "green-eyed monster" refers to an individual whose current actions appear motivated by envy. This is based on a line from Shakespeare's Othello.

Envy in religion

Envy is one of the seven deadly sins in the Catholic tradition. It is considered sinful because envious people ignore their own blessings, and focus on others' status rather than their own spiritual growth. Envy is often confused with the Deadly Sin of covetousness, or greed, a desire for material wealth (which may or may not belong to others). Envy is also strictly forbidden in Islam, as one should be happy with what (s)he has instead of looking at others.

Some biblical examples are:

"You shall not covet your neighborâ€™s house; you shall not covet your neighborâ€™s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor" (Exodus 20:1-17)
; Cain slaying Abel (Genesis 4:4-8);

Types of envy

Envy can be positive and negative, as it might motivate people to attain more themselves or to damage another person. Kant (1780/1997), in his Lectures on ethics, distinguished between "invidia qualificata" (malignant envy) and "invidia in generere" (envy without ill will). His distinction is based on whether hostility is present in the experience; if one feels hostile toward the other it is a malignant form, if not it is the milder, more benign form. According to Parrott (1991) the focus of malicious envy is "I wish that you do not have what you have" while for non-malicious envy the focus is on "I wish to have what you have".
